My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Next week we begin the spiritual journey of Lent. This sacred time of penance, dedicated by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving is a gift of God. I encourage you to plan for this opportunity. Please be reminded that Ash Wednesday (February 6), the first day of Lent, is a day of fasting and abstinence, and that all of the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. On Ash Wednesday there will be a Mass at noon, in the parish church, during which ashes will be blessed and distributed. There will also be a Liturgy of the Word, with Blessing and Distribution of Ashes at the Mount Olive College Chapel, at 6:30 p.m., in English, anda t 7:30 p.m., in Spanish. May God open our hearts in wonder of his healing presence during this sacred season of grace.

Mis Queridos Hermanos y Hermanos en Cristo:
En la semana próxima empezamos nuestra pereginación espiritual de La Cuaresmat. Este tiempo sagrado de penitencia, dedicado por la oración, el ayuno, y la limosna es un don de Dios. Les pido que se preparen para esta oportunidad. Favor de recordar que Miércoles de Ceniza (el 6 de febrero, el primer día de La Cuaresma, es un día de ayuno y abstinencia, y que todos los viernes de Cuaresma son días de abstinencia de la carne (salvo el pescado). El Miércoles de Ceniza habrá una Misa al mediodía, en la iglesia parroquial, durante la cual se va a bendecir y distribuir las cenizas. También habrá una Liturgia de La Palabra, con Bendición y Distribución de cenizas el la capilla de Mount Olive College, a las 6:30 p.m., in english, y a las 7:30 p.m., en español. Que Dios abra su corazón a la maravilla de Su Presencia Sanadora durante esta temporada sagrada de gracia.

Estimados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Al tiempo que estamos iniciando este sagrado Tiempo de la Cuaresma este Miércoles de Ceniza, se nos recuerda que la vida aquí en la tierra no es nuestro destino final porque “somos polvo y al polvo hemos de volver.” La Cuaresma es un tiempo anual de renovación cuando se nos llama, con la gracia de Dios, a hacer un cambio radical de mente y corazón. Nuestra respuesta la hacemos al practicar las disciplinas de la Cuaresma: la oración, el ayuno y la limosna.
En su oración, contemplen la presencia de Dios y escúchenlo cuando les hable a su corazón. Hagan el esfuerzo de participar de la Misa semanal aparte de nuestra obligación del domingo. Consideren rezar el rosario con la intención especial por la paz en nuestro mundo, en nuestras familias y en nuestros corazones.
Cuando ayunen, recuerden que las cosas terrenales que experimentamos nunca satisfacen en forma total nuestra hambre y sed espirituales. Todos nosotros dependemos de Dios. Tomen en serio la obligación de sacrificar o “renunciar” a algo en la Cuaresma para que la Vida de Dios pueda crecer en ustedes.
Continúen con su generosidad de dar limosna, especialmente apoyen las obras Cuaresmales de la Parroquia y Diocesanas, las cuales se dedican a ayudar al necesitado. Recuerden las palabras de Nuestro Señor Jesús: “Yo les aseguro que cuando lo hicieron con el más insignificante de mis hermanos, conmigo lo hicieron” (Mt. 25:40).
Les quiero asegurar que los recordaré de una forma muy especial en mis oraciones, al tiempo que nos unimos más cercanamente a los sufrimientos de Cristo durante este sagrado Tiempo. Que Nuestro Señor Jesús los bendiga abundantemente, los renueve de mente y corazón a través del poder de Su gracia.

Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life
Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, show forth, we beseech Thee, in Thy Church the Holy Spirit with whose power the apostles were so abundantly filled. We thank Thee for the blessings bestowed upon the work of priests and religious; and we pray that Thou wilt add to the number of those who now pray, labor, and sacrifice themselves for Thy glory and the salvation of souls. Give them unselfish zeal for Thy glory. O good Jesus, give us more priests and religious after Thine own Heart! Amen.
